As promised, let’s examine in more detail the steps I outlined in Part 1 in this series about making a plan for successful transformation you wish to achieve. In this communication, we’ll focus specifically on the first step of the process: Setting your goal. Before you consider what your goal is, it’s important that we first clarify a few points about setting your goal.
First, your goal should be uniquely yours and something you truly desire – not one you think others want for you, something you think will please others, or something you think “would be good for you”. If your goal fails this criterion, then you will not necessarily be wholly invested in making your goal a reality because you won’t really have total ownership for the desire outcome.
Second, your goal should be modeled on a positive outcome – not a negative outcome. You can want to do something good for yourself, or improve yourself, or help others – as all of these are things with a positive outcome. However, it’s both unhealthy and unlikely that you will be successful in the pursuit of a negative goal which causes harm or ill for yourself or others. How can any truly good person be invested in modeling a bad behavior?
Finally, your goal needs to be both challenging and inspiring for you. A goal worthy of your time and perseverance should provide you a benefit to instill confidence and inspire you to continue your journey toward inner greatness.
In my book, “Running Inspired – A Journey to Finding Your Inner Greatness, I shared my specific example of a goal I set to challenge and improve myself. Oddly, the achievement of running an ultra-marathon enabled me to view myself through an entirely different lens – and it was the basis for far greater and more important changes in my life thereafter, including: taking responsibility to leave a toxic job, starting my own business, patterning myself as a role model for my two daughters, and evangelizing the empowerment of women. There is no limit to what you can choose as a goal worthy of your focus. Do you want to lose weight and become healthier? Do you want to advance your career, change jobs, or maybe start your own business? Do you want to be a role model for your child? The list is truly endless… and surely there is *something* that nagging little voice in your head replays on a continuous loop.
Wanting, wishing, and hoping are all passive activities, and they will not help you achieve anything. Planning, executing, and adapting are all strong, positive actions which will take you away from your current state and toward your new (goal) state. So commit to your goal, write it down, and state that thing which you will no longer accept to continue hoping to have in your life, but instead will start taking action to *do something* and make it a part of your life.

So now that you’ve gotten the tools to help crystallize your goal for personal change and can clarify exactly what you want for yourself, you should start thinking about the specific steps you will take in planning to prepare yourself to achieve your goal.
